background
I live in Geneva where I have also been studied. After my Bachelor of Education, I completed a master's in continuing development. For three years I worked as a teacher in Geneva.
India has always fascinated me and I wanted to match my ideas about it with reality. For this reason I decided over the summer holidays to travel to India where I Opportunity was the project of William regulators to work KRRITI BAL.
In the weeks in the project I was able to perform many tasks, thanks to help regulators Willis.
The project
BAL KRRITI prepares children from poor areas prior to entry into the school. About thirty children participate in the program.
Everyday life is made as follows:
at 13.30, children are driven by the teachers take the bus to school.
From 14 to 14:30 there will be a launch phase, which ends with the distribution of fruit (so that children get at least once a day vitamins).
At 14.30 clock, the children are divided according to their level of education in three groups and learn it until 17.05. This time is divided into three lessons: 2 lessons in English, Hindi or mathematics and then an art class or lesson Performance.
between each lesson there is a five-minute break during which the children can go to the toilet and drink water.
From 17:05 to 17:15 will be held games and then the children took the bus back home.
then discuss the teachers the day and planned activities for the next day. There
Every other Saturday workshops are on the other Saturdays Teacher training courses conducted in order to improve teaching methods.
My tasks
The first day I went, the documents by the project, which included among other things, the existing teaching materials.
then was my main task, the teachers observed during the lessons and at the end of each day feedback to give.
These observations allowed me to determine key points, the weak points and improving things and making the teacher's attention to improve their teaching.
During this week, I also translated some documents and made suggestions for improvement.
On Saturday I had two hours to organize and conduct a teacher training. I shared it in two parts, a theoretical part consisted mainly of teaching methodology. The second part was created practical and concrete containing Examples of activities.
During my short stay I also tried to create worksheets for teachers.
The challenges
The language barrier
It is clear that my lack of knowledge of Hindi aggravated my observations. For this reason, I was not entirely possible I always interpret it right.
The difference between the Indian and Swiss education system
The Indian education system differs from the Swiss decisively as we follow in Switzerland, the freedom of expression and the "change" in the broad sense prevails in India largely a system of repetition and the frontal teaching.
The solution lies in the improvement of teaching methods, which however must be consistent with the existing education system.
The origin of the teacher and the will to encourage teachers from poor regions
The BAL KRRITI employed teachers get themselves out of poverty and regions do possess good social skills, However, for the most part a low level of education.
For this reason, teacher training, which includes the teaching of general knowledge, so important.
The children
There are children from poor areas, it is much harder with them to work as with other children. Their socio-economic context makes it difficult for them to appear regularly in the long-term project.
lack of time
Despite the good will, it is evident that 2 weeks are too short bring about a subsequent change . Nevertheless, I am very happy to have received the opportunity to support this project and hope one to have done though small contribution.
Thanks to BAL KRRITI and Regula Willi
